How does my pet get infected?

When they bite, mosquitoes can transmit heartworms into your pet’s bloodstream. This can cause severe and sometimes fatal damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Some pets may not show any signs of infection; in those that do, symptoms can vary widely. This is why bringing your pet in for regular heartworm testing is important. Our veterinarians can diagnose and stop them in their tracks before they cause any more harm.

How do I know if my pet has heartworm?

It can be months or even years before your pet starts showing any signs or symptoms of infection. Fortunately, a way to keep your dog or cat safe is by administering monthly heartworm preventives. Most heartworm medications also protect your pet against other parasites, such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, ear mites, fleas, and ticks. Signs your pet may be infected include:

  • Fatigue
  • Persistent cough
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
